For the first time since deregulation, the South African government has embarked on a major post-harvest technology innovation programme in partnership with the export industry. When the South African fruit sector launched its now well-publicised innovation programme, former Agriculture Minister Derek Hanekom said the objective was to develop an enabling framework in which other key stakeholders in the National System of Innovation could be coordinated to assist the fresh fruit industry in its endeavours to place its products on the world's markets.
