While South African exporters reflect on a tough export season in the Middle East, it has become clear that the citrus category offers the best opportunities for future growth. Instability on the market and a generally depressed outlook for citrus, South Africa's leading product category in the Middle East, are two prime reasons for South Africans' current difficulty in discussing their long-term plans for the region. Despite this, there is a general consensus that the Middle East will in future play an increasingly important role in the fortunes of South African growers. The South African view is best summed up by Unifrutti's Bernard Treptouw, who says that the fixed-price nature of the market, the short sailing time up the east coast of Africa and problems with demand in other parts of the world will shift the focus of South African exporters to the Middle East in the future.
