After a highly successful 2010, Lebanese traders have struggled since the arrival of the Arab Spring and the uncertainty that has come with it. Lebanese traders have had a tough time in the last decade. In the summer of 2006, the country resisted an invasion by the much better-armed Israeli army. Towards the end of the decade, the global economic crisis struck. However, according to Mohamed-Hicham Ayloush, general manager of Beirut-based Aimex (Ayloush For Import & Export), 2010 proved to be an excellent year for the company. "2010 was one of the few years in the last decade where we have seen such good results in our main markets of Beirut, Syria and Egypt," he tells trade middle east. "Sales volumes increased surprisingly, despite the hike in prices. We believe purchasing power was good enough and that the high rate of growth in Lebanon was helping thebusiness to grow sharply. We were extremely happy with the results. We put new targets in place for 2011 and planned for more growth."
