Although low spring temperatures are anticipated to cut overall volume, the outlook has failed to dampen the enthusiasm of exporters who are eyeing opportunities in Europe. As with so many fresh produce categories this year, US pears from the PacificNorthwest have received some particularly rough treatment from the weather. The first blow came in the form of a freeze during April, which caught many trees in bloom, resulting in significant damage. Temperatures continued to remain abnormally cool throughout the spring keeping bee activity to a minimum, and leading to an irregular fruit set.
