The Dubai-based machinery supplier has been unfazed by the recent turbulence and continues to innovate, according to managing director Ian Barker. IB: We recently installed the first fully automatic system from Giro for weighing and net-bagging a range of products. The PEG12/160 general-purpose weigher is able to handle potatoes, onions and citrus. This was linked to the recently updated Giro CA-9S net bag clipper, which now includes a servo drive for increased output and reliability. High-tech products such as Safe-line X-ray systems, metal detectors and Markem-Imaje coding systems have shown the biggest increases. New in 2011 was Al Thika's appointment as regional distributor for another product line from Mettler-Tole-do, Cl-Vision. This advancedoptical inspection system can not only detect typical defects like skewed caps and misplaced labels, but also 'read' the production and expiry dates - a particularly challenging task due to the inherent variability of ink-jet code quality.
