Hailstorms and low temperatures have not hit growers as much as first feared, although harvesting and exports are suffering delays. It has been revealed that the overall South African table grape export crop will not be dramatically affected by the hail damage that has hit parts of the Orange River region at the beginning of December. While individual growers have been impacted, the damage was restricted to only certain areas ofahe 300km-long stretch of desert land along the river, and of the expected shipping total of between 48-54m cartons of grapes, damage in the Orange River amounts to less than one per cent of this total.
