The monograph under review convincingly proves the thesis in its title. It is demonstrated that soil is the place where the turnovers of virtually all gaseous substances are partly locked; it is a kind of control office for the gases, including greenhouse gases, that affect the climate of the planet, gases that destroy the ozone layer, gases that exert an acidification effect on soils, and gases that affect human health. Soil is a sink for all these gases and, at the same time, a powerful source of gas emission. These processes are considered in chapter 2 ("Qualitative and Quantitative Composition of Soil Air and the Gas Function of Soils").
