A recent European vote gave colour-coded traffic light labelling a red light, clearing thew way for the rival Guideline Daily Amounts scheme to be introduced on a mandatory basis. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels recently voted overwhelmingly against plans to introduce a compulsory system of colour-coded labels on food packs, or so-called 'traffic light' labelling. The 17 June vote was made despite pressure from groups such as the European Consumers' Organisation (Beuc), who havebacked independent research suggesting that consumers understand the simplicity of the traffic light system.
