Increases in fruit terminal capacity and last year's takeover of freight forwarder Censped by Kuehne & Nagel are helping the Slovenian port to sustain its recent growth in volumes. Slovenia's importance as an entry point into the European Union for fresh produce imports from the eastern Mediterranean has continued to rise during the past couple of years as increased volumes of fruit and vegetables from countries such as Israel and Egypt have increased. As demand in central and eastern European markets has also continued to grow, so too has the strategic benefit of routing shipments via the Port of Koper, Slovenia's primary fresh produce port.
