An industrially produced soda-lime-silica and an industrially fabricated sodium aluminosilicate were treated in salt melts with different NaNO3/KNO3 ratios and heated at 470°C for 6 h. Measurements of the potassium and sodium concentrations on the ion exchanged surface as well as perpendicular to it showed that the potassium/sodium ratios in the glass increased with increasing potassium/sodium ratio of the salt. For the sodium aluminosilicate glass, these ratios were much larger in comparison to the soda-lime-silica glass. Furthermore, at the same temperature, the inter-diffusion coefficients are much larger in the sodium aluminosilicate glass although the T_g of this glass is 50 K higher than that of the soda-lime-silica glass. Hence, the ion exchange process is much faster and more efficient in the sodium aluminosilicate glass.
