Crystallization kinetics of borosilicate glasses for CHROMPIC nuclear waste vitrification

Borosilicate glasses used for vitrification of CHROMPIC radioactive waste into a boroaluminosilicate glass matrix are considered. The composition dependence of the crystallisation kinetics of glasses with chemical composition close to that currently used for CHROMPIC vitrification was studied. Pairs of glass samples were studied in which the amount (in wt%) of each of the seven components were increased and decreased as follows: (3.5 +/- 3.5)Li2O, (9.0 +/- 5.0)Na2O, (14.5 +/- 3.5) B2O3, (5.5 +/- 5.5)Al2O3, (5.5 +/- 5.5)TiO2, (4.5 +/- 4.5)Fe2O3, (57.5 +/- 5.5)SiO2. A crystallisation peak was observed for only five glasses, and a crystallisation kinetics analysis could only be performed for these glasses. The crystallisation kinetics were studied by DTA at constant heating rates of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, and 15.0 degrees C/min. The kinetic parameters of crystallisation were calculated by a model-fitting approach, using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov kinetic model and a nonlinear least squares method. It was found that decreasing the content of network modifying alkaline oxides, Li2O, and Na2O, as well as increasing the content of network forming oxides, Al2O3, and TiO2, increases the tendency of the glass to crystallise.
