A brief review is given of the scientific career of HDoz. Dr. Doris Ehrt to whom the International Phosphate Conference 2014 is dedicated. The Phosphate Conference was held jointly with the Eighth International Conference on Borate Glasses, Crystals and Melts, in Pardubice. This concurrence is most fitting, since Doris Ehrt devoted a significant part of her research to borate and borosilicate glasses. Doris Ehrt (nee Paul) was born shortly after the Second World War in Schkolen, Thuringia. She studied chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and joined the emerging glass group of Prof. Werner Vogel in 1969. Her initial research focused on phase separation in borosilicate glasses. In 1976, she began her research into phosphate and fluoride phosphate optical glasses with high positive anomalous partial dispersion and thus with a reduced secondary spectrum. These glasses were to be used in high performance optics in which glass lenses were to be substituted for CaF2 single crystals. An abundance of multicomponent fluoroaluminate and fluoride phosphate glass systems were prepared and studied to investigate their structure and optical, thermal and chemical properties. Since Doris Ehrt summarises her work on fluoride phosphate glass systems in the previous pages, the current paper is focused more on her overall career, including all her non-phosphate related works and the transition from the socialist German Democratic Republic to the reunified Federal Republic of Germany.
