Conversion of agricultural wastes to cellulose derivatives

Five Agricultural waste materials:Plantain stem(Musa paradisiaca).screw pine leaves(Pandenus candelabrum),bamboo raphia stalk(Raphia vinifera.raffia from Raphia hookeri and branch of oil palm tree {Elaeis gitineensis)were subjected to soda pulping and hypochloritc bleaching system.Results obtained show that the pulp yield from these materials were 20.44%.17.95%.41.89%.67.40% and 48.41% of respectively.The pulp was acetylated with acetic anhydride in ethanoic acid catalysed by concentrated KI2SO_4 to obtain cellulose acetate derivatives(cellulose diacetates and triacetates).Cellulose diacctate yield were 32.48%.28.47%.2900%.23.75% and 30.63% for plantain stem,screw pine leaves,bamboo raphia stalk,raffia from Raphia hookeri and oil palm branch respectively.While the cellulose triacetate yield were 40.35%.35.45%.37.75% 70.45% and 45.85% respectively The presence of these cellulose derivatives was confirmed by a solubility test in acetone and chloroform respectively.
