Mechanical properties of optically transparent glass-ceramics containing lithium mica nanocrystals

Optically transparent glass-ceramics that contain lithium mica nanocrystals of <30 nm size were fabricated and their mechanical properties were examined as a function of heat treatment temperature. The fracture toughness (K_(lc)) increased with increases in heat treatment temperature and the crystallized mica; for example, the value of K_(lc) was 0-68 MPam~(1/2) for the glass and 1·37 MPam~(1/2) for the sample heat treated at 600°C. The Vickers hardness (H_v) increased from 3·39 to 3·97 GPa and the bend strength (σ) increased from 81·8 to 169·4 MPa, but both decreased with further increases of heat treatment temperature. It is shown that the mechanical properties of mica glass are significantly improved by nanocrystallization.
