A suitable relationship between oxide ion polarisability,optical basicity,Yamashita-Kurosawa's interaction parameter and mean OIs binding energy in XPS spectra has been searched for on the basis of experimental and calculated data reported in the literature for B_2O_3-SiO_2,Al_2O_3-SiO_2,La_2O_3-P_2O_5,R_2O-SiO_2(R=Li,Na,K and Rb),PbO-SiO_2,NaO_2-GeO_2,Sb_2O_3-B_2O_3,Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3 and R_2O-TeO_2(R=Li,Na and K)glasses.It has been established that in general the Ols binding energy decreases with increasing refractive index based optical basicity A(n_o)of these glasses.The observed Ols chemical shift to lower binding energy could be explained by an increase in electron charge density of the oxide ions due to an increase intheir electronic polarisability.Increased oxide ion polarisability means stronger electron donor ability of the oxide ions involving participation of an averaged oxide ion in chemical bonds with increased ionicity.The observed correlation between mean Ols binding energy in XPS spectra and the refractive index based optical basicity A(n_o)of the discussed glasses can probably be used as a starting point in the search of a common basicity scale of oxide glasses.
