silver metaphosphate glass is believed to be a silver ion conductor. Generally speaking, this is correct, however, when the gold anoded glass is biased with dc single or multiple pulses of 250 or 500 V/cm at 140 deg C, the depth profiles with x-ray photoelectron spectroscoppy suggest conduction of the metaphosphate (PO_3~-) ions toward the anode besides conduction of the silver ions toward the cathode. When, on the other hand, silver is used in lieu of gold as the anode, the silver ions in the silver anode are very easily injected into glass. The rate of silver injection folloed by their conduction is higher than those of intrinsic silver ions and the negative ions. Therefore, no depletion of silver nor accumulatins of oxygen and phosphorus are seen at the anode glass interface.
