Optical emission spectroscopy of iron containing soda-lime-silica glasses

Soda-lime-silica glasses with the base composition 16Na_2O centre dot 10CaO centre dot 74SiO_2 with different iron concentrations have been prepared. They were melted either from Fe_2O_3 or from iron oxalate (strongly reducing) raw materials. They were heated to temperatures of around 1200 deg C, and emission spectra were recorded. These emission spectra were calibrated using black body radiation. The light emission decreased with increasing iron concentration. The temperature gradient formed at the surface of the melt is responsible for this behaviour. The larger the temperature gradient, the more the emission decreases with increasing iron concentration. The emission spectra obtained, were simulated using experimentally determined temperature dependent absorption coefficients and experimentally determined temperature profiles.
