The majority of experimental results on phase formation processes in glass forming systems are interpreted from the framework of classical nucleation theory(CNT).CNT is based,as far as the thermodynamic description of the properties of the clusters is involved,on Gibbs classical approach to the description of heterogeneous systems.It is widely assumed that Gibbs classical theory represents the best thermodynamic treatment of heterogeneous systems available.Indeed,Gibbs could give,for example,in his fundamental paper,for the first time a qualitative explanation of the basic origin of the existence of thermodynamically metastable states and their decay by nucleation and growth.However,in attempts at a quantitative interpretation of experimental results on nucleation and cluster growth,the application of Gibbs theory led to a variety of problems.Attempts to resolve these resulted in repeated intensive and partly controversial discussions for six or seven decades and to the development of different approaches like density functional computations or computer modelling.
