Differential thermal analysis (DTA), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to study crystallisation of AP40 and RKKP glassy materials. Weight compositions of both glasses are very close to the Ilmaplantparent glass: SiO_2=44-00; CaO=32-16; MgO=2-84; CaF_2=5-00; Na_2O=4-60; K_2O=0-20; P_2O_5=11-20 for AP40 and SiO_2= 43-84; CaO=31-93; MgO=2-79; CaF_2-4-94; Na_2O=4-55; K_2O=0-19; P_2O_5=10-27; Ta_2O_5=0-99; La_2O_3=0-50 for RKKP. Crystallised AP40 and RKKP consist of wollastonite and fluoroapatile nanocrystals, not larger than 500 nm. Wollastonite crystallises by a mechanism of surface nucleation. Crystallisation is preceded by glass-in-glass phase separation into phosphate and silicate glassy phases. The glass-in-glass phase separation is finer in RKKP. The experimental results suggest that Ta_2O_5, present only in the RKKP glass composition, catalyses the nucleation of the phosphate glassy phase.
