摘要

The effect of composition on the density of titanium-doped vitreous silica has been reported by a number of investigators, with varying results. While it is widely believed that the density of these glasses is almost independent of composition, there are studies which contradict this finding. The current study discusses the density of as-received titanium-doped silicas containing from 0 to 10 mol percent TiO_2 and the effect of changes in fictive temperature on the density of these glasses. The effect of irradiation on the density of a commercial titanium-doped silica is also discussed. An expression for the relation between the position of the infrared band (~2260 cm~(-1)) used to determine the fictive temperature of undoped vitreous silica and the TiO_2 concentration of these glasses is derived from the data.
