Carston Diederich Ahrens (1837-1918) was the most famous maker of hand-ground precision optical glass, polarizing Nicol prisms and quartz plates in the world during his lifetime. Prisms in every possible size and geometric shape, each polished to specification, he supplied to many leading scientists, institutions and instrument-makers throughout the second half of the 19th century. This was a golden age of innovations in advanced prismatic projections in applied astronomy, geology, microscopy and spectroscopy (Fig. 1).
