We did read, with great interest, the article by Se-Yeong Oh et al. entitled 'CD44-negative cells in head and neck squamous carcinoma also have stem-cell like traits' published in this journal (January 2013).CD44, in combination with other markers, has been a priority in the identification and isolation of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Widely used as it is, the applicability of CD44 as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cancer stem cells (HNSCC CSCs) marker is seriously questioned in this article. We raise possible concerns about the experiments performed in the article, the answering of which may further confirm the conclusion that CD44 cannot be used as a selective marker of spheroid-forming, tumour-initiating or chemoresistant cell populations.
