Acute disseminated toxoplasmosis in a colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis).

Acute disseminated toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 9 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) kept at a zoo in Switzerland. On haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, clearly identifiable organisms were present only in the liver (7/9) and lungs (2/9).In another squirrel monkey, euthanized 2 months later, protozoal cysts typical of chronic toxoplasmosis were found in the brain. In contrast, T. gondii antigen was demonstrated immunohistochemically in the majority of parenchymal organs investigated, namely the liver (9/10), lung (10/10), heart (10/10), small intestine (9/10), brain (9/9), spleen (7/8), pancreas (7/8), mesenteric lymph nodes (7/8), adrenals (7/8), kidneys (8/10), and large intestine (4/9) using a polyclonal-antibody. Gross changes consisted of splenomegaly, red mottled lungs, and pin-point red foci in some livers. Histologically, most animals had varying degrees of necrotizing hepatitis, interstitial pneumonia, necrosis of mesenteric lymph nodes, necrotizing enteritis, neutrophilic myocarditis, lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis. These findings suggest that in some cases of acute disseminated toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys organisms are not identifiable in haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of many organs and that immunohistochemical methods may be necessary to reach a conclusive diagnosis.
