摘要

We evaluated whether the brown spider Loxosceles gaucho (Gertsch, 1967) (Araneae, Sicariidae) prefers to use man-made retreats rather than natural ones. In a fragmented forest, where L. gaucho is native, a pile of bricks and an adjacent area of forestlitter were left undisturbed for two years. Afterwards we collected the brown spiders from these microhabitats. A higher number of spiders were found in the litter layers, but most of the adults were found amongst the bricks. Although there is no evidence that brown spiders prefer to colonise man-made environments, we suggest that the screened architecture of the pile of bricks decreases' encounters between adult spiders and thus may support aggregation. This could help to explain brown spider infestations in some man-made environments.
