At the beginning of August 2009 I returned to Guanajuato state, Mexico, to continue with my ongoing studies on the spider genus Latrodectus Walckenaer, 1805, as well as to study other elements of the local arachnofauna which include the distinctive, cosmopolitan species of orb weaving spider Argiope trifasciata (Forskal, 1775). This species is commonly known as the banded garden spider in the United States, whereas in Mexico it is known as either Argiope bandeada (banded Argiope) or Argiope de los Huertos (Argiope of the Orchards). Argiope trifasciata is one of eight species in the genus Argiope Audouin, 1826 occurring in the Americas, including the West Indies (Motta & Levi, 2009), and is distributed from southern and south-eastern Canada to Southern Chile and Northern Argentina (Levi, 1968, 2004), although it is generally absent from areas that are covered by tropical forests (Levi, 1968).
