HEALTH CARE WORKERS ARE AT HIGH RISK of injuries and illness (Lin & Cohen, 1984a, 1984b; Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, 2003; Smith & Sutcliffe, 1998). An annual survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (National Safety Council, 2002) indicates that the occupational injury and illness incident rates among various sectors of health services are at least one-third above the service industry average. The incidence of injury and disability among nursing and personal care facilities is more than three times the service industry average. Similarly, nursing and personal care facilities experience above-average rates of lost workdays. Each year, nursing homes average 7.9 lost workdays per 100 full-time employees compared with the service industry average of 2.2 days.
