摘要

IBM-Owego was the main facility of the Federal Systems Division of IBM. I was a human factors engineer there for 32 years before retiring with the downsizing at the end of 1991. Since then, I've been consulting for IBM-Owego, which was sold to Loral, which sold it to Lockheed Martin. Sometimes when we were between contracts, we sought out projects on the commercial side of IBM that could use our talents and keep us gainfully employed. That's the situation we were in at the beginning of 1970. We had completed our work on the B-1 bomber and were generating information flow diagrams of the process necessary to construct a customized main-frame computer (Big Iron). The integration of a main-frame computer required parts and software from nearly every facility across IBM. At that time, most of the information was transferred by punch cards and tape reels, and no one could describe the complete process.
