Trematodes are widespread in aquaculture. However, the presence of these parasites in Colombian fish has not been adequately investigated. A total of 147 specimens of Caquetaia kraussii were collected from Totumo Marsh, north of Colombia, and the parasites found in their eyes were isolated and quantified. Morphological examination of larvae in the eyes revealed the presence of the trematode Diplostomum compactum. The prevalence of the trematode in C. kraussii was 78.6% and 25.0% for 2010 and 2011 sampling campaigns, respectively. In 2010, trematode mean abundance positively correlated with fish condition factor (rho = 0.258, P = 0.009) and hepato-somatic index (rho = 0.304, P = 0.002). These associations were no longer observed in 2011 sampling. This is the first record of Diplostomum compactum in Colombian fish, and since little is known about the host-parasite relationship between C. kraussi and this parasite, basic research is fundamental to develop national guidelines that could be used to protect aquaculture and prevent further environmental spread.
