Cloud and aerosol particles are crucial components of the Earth's climate system. They modify the transfer of solar radiation in the atmosphere by scattering and absorption processes. The clouds and atmospheric gases, and to a lesser extent aerosol particles, mainly modulate the transfer of terrestrial radiation within the atmosphere by absorption and emission. The local impact of aerosol particles and clouds on the solar and terrestrial radiative energy budget of the atmosphere can be calculated using radiative transfer models. The models require measurements of both the microphysical and chemical properties of aerosol particles and clouds, which can be obtained, for example, by aircraft in situ observations.
