The Geoforum organizing committee, assisted by Drs. I. McKay and G. Drennan, invited a number of speakers from various tertiary institutions, the CSIR and industry to provide the Forum with an overview of various aspects relating to geoscience education. Prof. Vasconcelos (Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), Maputo) was invited to deliver a keynote presentation as his institution has had extensive experience in terms of curriculum design and planning, taking into account both government and industry requirements, for geoscience education. The talks set the scene for a panel discussion that aimed to establish some guidelines for the way ahead in terms of geoscience education in southern Africa. As 'immediate past-president' of the Geological Society Prof. Uwe Reimold (WITS) opened the Geoscience Education Forum and outlined some of the challenges and needs currently facing geoscience education in South Africa. He raised the issue of increasing student numbers and the need for increasing teaching capacity without compromising quality. The need for regional cooperation between SADC institutions offering geoscience education was highlighted by Prof. Vasconcelos (UEM, Maputo) stressing the need for good programs that offer academic challenge as well as fieldwork experience.
