Few readers will probably recall that Samuel Clemens ("Mark Twain") the famous American author/humorist (highlighted by Antony Cowey in the December 2011 Geobulletin), visited South Africa in 1896 on the last leg of a round-the-world lecture tour. Politically the country was in turmoil: Cecil John Rhodes had just resigned as Prime Minister of Cape Colony in the aftermath of the disastrous Jameson raid, and the trial of members of the Johannesburg Reform Committee on charges of high treason were in progress.
