The Quaternary volcanoes of Italy are among the most widely studied phenomena on the planet. Of the styles of eruption generally recognized by volcanologists, three are named from this area: strombolian, vulcanian, and Plinian (latter after the AD79 eruption of Vesuvius: Ceotraveller March 2011). The most well known of the island volcanoes are Etna on the eastern coast of Sicily and Stromboli and Vulcano, two of a group of eight Aeolian Islands.
