This review discusses the importance of landscape ecology in land use planning. Several aspects are discussed, including land management, analysis of large landscape patterns, assessment of isolated habitats in landscapes, classification of vegetation types, the use of geographical information systems, and the effect of land use on landscape ecology. A case study from the Padua Plain in northern Italy is described to illustrate mapping methods for landscape interpretation. Maps show the identification and spatial distribution of natural habitats, possible ecological corridors (to connect different habitats), and the level of disturbances of habitats.
