Virulence of Chilean field isolates of Flavobacterium psychrophilum in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr

In the current study, Atlantic salmon (Salmo solar L.) were challenged with five different Chilean field isolates of F. psychrophilum to evaluate their virulence and their ability to induce mortality via the intramuscular route. Virulence of the field isolates varied from avirulent to highly virulent, while mortality progression and ulcer development depended on the challenge isolate and dose used. Although high mortality was reproducibly induced during the experimental infections, our results suggest that Atlantic salmon are less susceptible to experimental challenge with F. psychrophilum, compared to what has previously been reported in challenge studies on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss L.) using similar challenge doses. Interestingly, challenge of Atlantic salmon with a highly virulent strain of F. psychrophilum, isolated from rainbow trout, did not induce any mortality. Overall, our results add weight to the suggestions that intramuscular injection is presently the only feasible challenge route for inducing high levels of mortality in larger salmonids and that optimization of the infectious load for experimental studies may be facilitated by careful selection of challenge strain.
