First report of Flavobacterium psychrophilum isolated from cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Argentina

Sub-acute mortality of farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, associated with symptoms of dermal necrosis has been often noticed by fish farmers in reservoirs of North Patagonia, Argentina. However, the causative agent of this problem has not been identified. In this work, rainbow trout, which were moribund and showing dermal necrosis on the body surface, were collected from a hatchery and fish farms in Neuquen province. Yellow pigment producing bacteria on KDM-2 agar plates were isolated from the kidneys of those fish. These bacteria grew on KDM-2 agar plates but not in other culture media at the primary isolation. The results from PCR analysis and biochemical characterization indicate that these isolates can be determined as Flavobacterium psychrophilum. Results from two challenge tests, performed by rearing fish under overcrowded conditions and by intraperitoneal injection of bacteria, suggest virulence of the isolated bacteria to juvenile rainbow trout and their ability to cause disease. This is the first report of F. psychrophilum in Argentina.
