THIS article is a discussion about the need for internationally-recognised, independent, standard tests for borehole survey instruments in mining, engineering and related industries. Such tests would allow impartial and practical measurements of instrument accuracy, based on normal field usage rather than from theoretical calculations or controlled laboratory tests. The primary purpose of most drilling is to obtain information in the third dimension, whether in exploration, mining, quarrying or civil engineering. There are some exceptions such as blasting and grouting holes. However, in almost all cases it is essential that a survey is made of the borehole to define its path. This survey is usually based on a series of inclination and azimuth measurements made at regular intervals down the hole. The result should be data that accurately defines the 3D location for any given point down the hole.
