摘要

WATER is an excellent heat-transfer fluid, but it freezes at 0 deg C. As most ground-source heat-pump (GSHP) systems are subject to sub-zero temperatures it is necessary to provide anti-freeze protection. The coldest temperature recorded in the UK was -26.1 deg C at Newport, Shropshire, on January 10,1982. In comparison, the coldest temperature recorded in Plymouth was -8.8 deg C in 1979. Coastal temperatures are nearly always higher than those found inland and/or at altitude. Based on this information, it would be reasonable to protect GSHP systems to between -10 deg C and -25 deg C We would suggest protection down to -15 deg C for most mainland installations and -20 deg C for high-altitude and highland installations.
