摘要

SCIENTISTS have drilled nearly a mile beneath the ocean floor into one of the world's most active earthquake zones on the Kumano Basin, off Kii Peninsula, about 58km southeast of Japan, in order to gather seismic data. Despite harsh weather and ocean conditions, and the site's complex geology, for the first time in the history of scientific ocean drilling the deep-sea drilling vessel Chikyu conducted riser drilling to a depth of 1,603m beneath the sea floor (at a water depth of 2,054m). The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is an international marine research programme that explores the Earth's history and structure as recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks, and monitors sub-seafloor environments.
