The US president's budget request for Fiscal Year 2016, which was released to the press on February 2, proposes US$1.2 billion for the US Geological Survey (USGS). This is a significant increase from the Fiscal Year 2015 enacted level - up by almost $150 million - and shows the administration's support for scientific innovation and research for management of natural resources. Suzette Kimball, acting USGS director, commented: "The USGS has a strong 136-year legacy of providing reliable science to decision-makers. This budget request recognises our unique capabilities with multi-disciplinary earth-science research and will allow the USGS to meet societal needs for our nation now and in the future."
