Gas was at the heart of the EU’s new energy security strategy with diversifying supplies, increasing production, developing shale, better interconnectivity and improved efficiency all promoted as a response to the crisis in Ukraine. The blueprint, unveiled Wednesday, set out ambitious aspirations but few clear cut solutions to the longstanding central problem: the continent’s over-dependence on Russian gas.
