摘要

The Working Group on Geoarchaeology of the InternationalAssociation of Geomorphologists/IAG (http://www.geomorph. org/main.html) was formed at the 1997 International Conference in Bologna. The Working Group defines Geoarchaeology as "the geosciences and geographical methods and techniques applied to prehistory, archaeology and history". Its aim is to promote Geoarchaeology in an open-minded way and from an interdisciplinary point of view. To us, Geoarchaeology is not a discipline, but an interdisciplinary approach (Fouache, Pavlopoulos, Stiros, 2010) which has everything to gain by taking geomorphological methods and techniques into account. The good integration of the Working group on Geoarchaeology among the community of geomorphologists is due to the fact that geomorphology is a major component of the geoarchaeological approach (Brown 1997, Waters 1997, Rapp and Hill 1998, Bravard et al. 2009) and that the geoarchaeological approach has now become widely accepted in archaeological programmes. It is generally acknowledged that it is necessary to take the landscape and environmental dynamics into account to reconstitute a complete history of societies and to study the interaction between humans and their environment. Geomorphology plays an important role in the geoarchaeological approach, and has greatly benefitted from its collaboration with archaeology over the past decades. It is the reason why the geoarchaeological session at the 7th International Geomorphology Conference in Melbourne was entitled "Geomorphology and Geoarchaeology: cross-contribution". The session was opened to any geoarchaeological study, but was particularly focused on highlighting the impact of geomorphology in the field of geoarchaeology, as illustrated by the papers selected for publication in this volume.
