摘要

Integrated watershed management programmes have come to be recognized internationally as an important holistic approach for the natural resource management. These programmes can be of great use for overall planning in quest for sustainable development. Himalayas are considered as one of the most fragile ecosystems and therefore its proper management is an expedient need. Present paper attempts to conceptualize watershed management in a special context to the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh; which follows the codification system given by All India Soil and Land Use Survey (AIS & LUS). The paper also tries to analyze major watershed management programmes being implemented in the state. Most of these programmes do not follow the codification system and have chosen administrative units (districts) as the macro unit for the micro watershed units, which is against the spirit of a geographical unit like watershed. Therefore a need was felt to give a proper framework for ranking macro and micro watersheds to enhance the efficacy of watershed development programmes in Himachal Pradesh.
