Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) have become a hot topic in laboratory environments over the past few years. ELNs are easier to search upon, support collaboration amongst many users, and can be made more secure than their paper counterparts. Recordkeeping is a key activity for all types of laboratories. Records of inventions are the basis of patents and intellectual property. Laboratory records also document details of product manufacturing, for purposes of quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and consumer protection. There are some good reasons why the move away from paper has been treated with a good deal of caution. However, there is a growing trend towards implementing an electronic solution for documenting experiments based on expected productivity gains and an enhanced approach to managing scientific knowledge. The argument for an electronic solution is becoming increasingly powerful as one by one the objections to the transition from paper to electronic weaken. Major objections can be considered to fit into three different categories or perspectives.
