摘要

About a fifth of the developing world's population lacks access to drinking water (source: UNO). One could say that water-related problems are a world priority, and this is reflected by the fact that they figure in the Millennium Development Goals. During 2005, due to its expertise and its command of advanced techniques, BRGM was involved across the world in many actions dealing with these problems. In Bangladesh, BRGM set up a master plan for providing water to the town of Khulna (1.2 million inhabitants). The main problem arises from the poor quality of the water in the two aquifers concerned: arsenic pollution in one, possible salt-water intrusions in the other. BRGM drilled wells, ran pumping tests, carried out a water-quality analysis programme, etc., on the basis of which it built a mathematical model and a Geographic Information System in order to create scenarios for rational exploitation of the resource.
