Several glasses were studied with the aim of obtaining glass ceramic compositions suitable for application as tile glazes. MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 based compositions were selected as this system crystallises cordierite which exhibits high hardness and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The sintering and crystallisation behaviour, microstructure and thermal expansion of the selected compositions were investigated. Well crystallised microstructures were observed showing cordierite as the main crystalline phase. Alkali oxides were added to the final compositions to improve material properties so that low porosity glass ceramic materials with suitable coefficients of thermal expansion for glaze applications were obtained.
