Since we are fortunate in the South to not be covered up with many feet of snow or to endure subzero temperatures, we have the ability to get outdoors and garden year-round. While Northerners retreat from their gardens in the winter, we in the South have many beautiful winter days that are warm enough to be comfortably outside. Conversely, our season to retreat indoors is the summer with its heat, humidity and biting bugs. When asked about winter interest for the garden, many people immediately thinkof plants that are evergreen, have interesting texture, lingering fruit or flower at an odd time. While these are excellent ways to have winter interest, they aren't the only ones. Incorporating interesting plants with beautiful hard-scaping that may have been hidden by foliage during the summer months or relocating containers can give the feeling of having two gardens in the same space.
