FORWARD planning to pave the way for annual production of 350 hectares of tomatoes is a major logistical task for SP Exports. Resource manager, Michael Philip, works years ahead, selecting a mix of blocks from the business' own properties and leased land for two years of tomato production. Tomatoes work well in rotation with a crop of sugarcane, which is typically in the ground for five years - sufficient time to break the pest and disease cycle.
