As reported by the Joint Association of the Aluminium Industry (GDA), in the first half of 2003 rolled aluminium products saw above-average growth. The result in this production sector stands in marked contrast to the general economic trend in Germany. Since rolled semis account for about 50 percent of aluminium production, such a development indicates a positive trend for the aluminium industry as a whole. Between January and May 2003 a total of 733,800 t of rolled semis were produced in Germany, 11.9 percent more than in the same period last year. That this was in no way a fluke, is confirmed by the same comparison a year earlier: in 2002 production was up by 8.1 percent compared with the whole of 2001.
