ON THE NIGHT of March 15,2009 the besieged Paki-stan People's Party gov-ernment in Islamabadfinally buckled under un-precedented political pressure to restoreChoudhry Iftikhar Mohammed to the posi-tion of chief justice of the Supreme Court.In the build-up to that eventful night, oneof the most obvious appeals that saner ele-ments within the government would havebeen making to President Asif Ali Zardariwas a simple one-restoring the judgewould return some semblance of normalcyto Pakistani politics.
