IN NOVEMBER 2007, Yahoo! Inc.did what it could have done two years ago when it became knownthat the company had aided the 2005 con-viction of Chinese journalist Shi Tao, nowserving 10 years in prison for "revealingstate secrets." In a legal settlement, Yahoopledged to provide an undisclosed amountof "financial, humanitarian and legal sup-port" to the families of Shi Tao and WangXiaoning, another dissident jailed in 2003for 10 years with the help of email datasupplied by Yahoo. This came immediate-ly after Yahoo cofounder and chief execu-tive officer, Jerry Yang, made a dramaticpublic apology to Shi Tao's mother, GaoQinsheng, at a United States Congressio-nal hearing. He bowed solemnly to herthree times as tears rolled down hercheeks.
